Description of Pomerol:

Pomerol occupies a special place in Bordeaux-lovers' hearts. This tiny, rural region just northwest of Saint-Èmilion has never been classified and is oddly bereft of grand châteaux structures. It takes mere minutes to drive around the entire commune, past every famous Pomerol name; there is a Burgundian dimension to the area, with its small vineyards. Still, no other commune in the world is resplendent with such sublime wines, enigma and fervent adoration.
Pomerol’s topsoil is mostly clay and gravel covering a ferrous, iron base known as crasse de fer. As one proceeds westward, the soil grows sandier and less propitious. Pomerol is synonymous with Merlot; it is here that the varietal is in excelsis. The varietal is sometimes blended with Cabernet Franc (Cabernet Sauvignon vines are rare in the commune).

Pomerol wines possess savory bouquets, often redolent of wet sand or espresso. As may be expected, Merlot engenders a smooth, less austere texture, although the best Pomerol wines age as long and as well as the finest premiers crus of the Left Bank.
